Boat Maintenance Checklist
Every boat needs ongoing maintenance to stay seaworthy. We recommend maintaining a monthly and an annual schedule to keep everything in good shape. It's also important to have a quick boat maintenance checklist you run through whenever you're considering taking it out on the water. Check off these to-dos so every outing is fun and safe.
Before Every Outing
Assess these five things the day before or the early morning of a trip on the waves.
Batteries and Battery Cables
Check that the batteries are securely mounted and that their terminal connections don't move. Also, check for signs of damage, such as corrosion. The battery cables should be smooth, with no cracks or swelling.
Fuel
Fill your tank before every trip and check the fuel lines for leaks. This is also a good time to check the fuel vents and filter to make sure they look clean and clear.
Engine Oil Levels
You can easily check the engine oil by wiping the dipstick, reinserting it, and reading the dipstick. Verify that the engine oil is at the correct level and that it doesn't look dirty or discolored.
Propeller
Visually inspect the propeller before the boat goes in the water. Make sure the propeller nut is secure, and visually inspect the propeller for cracks, dented blades, and any debris caught around the shaft.
Safety Gear
Every boat should have safety gear ready: life jackets, fire extinguishers, a bilge pump, backup lights, and sound signaling equipment.
Regular Checks (Every Month or So)
Monthly maintenance check-ins are a bit more in-depth. But checking your boat frequently can help you catch problems early and protect your outings from repair-related disruptions.
Engine
Whether you go out on the water every week or it's been a while since your last trip, add these quick to-dos to your boat maintenance checklist:
Inspect for leaks
Clean out the raw water strainer
Visually inspect the belts and hoses
Oil and Oil Filter
Check the oil to make sure it's clear, and the level sits between the min and max lines. Also, check the filter for building and leaks every month, and be ready to replace it every 50 to 100 hours of use.
Bilge Pump
Inspect the wiring, test the modes and high-water alarm to verify they work, and clean the area and the strainer so the bilge pump can operate easily and reliably.
Steering System
Check your hydraulic lines and ensure the components are securely connected. Also, grease the fittings.
Hull and Topsides
Clean and inspect the hull and topsides of your boat every month. This clears away debris and gives you a chance to look for developing damage.
Electrical Systems
Check your batteries, test that the electrical systems turn on, and double-check all the navigation lights.
Electrical Lines
Inspecting the wiring for corrosion and loose terminal connections.
Other Fluid Levels
Check these fluid levels:
Coolant
Fuel
Power steering
Transmission
If they're milky, dirty, or low, refill or replace them.
Battery
Inspect the battery to remove corrosion, check that the connections are tight, and verify that the battery holds a 12.79 volt charge.
Trim Tabs
Inspect all of the underwater components for corrosion, organic buildup, and loose subcomponents.
Propeller and Propshaft
Clean the propeller by scrubbing away buildup and removing debris. Then lubricate the shaft and make sure the fasteners are secure.
Annual Service
Even Florida has boating seasons. Perform these tasks semiannually.
Restarting in Spring
If you put your boat away for the winter, take the time to dewinterize the engine, check for leaks and damage, and check the fluids before your first trip out.
Winterizing Your Boat
If you don't plan on using your boat during the fall and winter, prepare your boat for long-term storage. While Florida doesn't have many freeze concerns, adding fuel stabilizers and flushing the cooling system can help your boat sit idle until spring with less risk of damage.
