ATV maintenance helps keep your powersports vehicle in the best possible condition to ensure that it runs better and lasts longer. With the right tools, many of the simpler ATV maintenance tasks can be performed at home. Use this list of tips from Riva Motorsports Space Coast to better maintain your ATV.

Review Your Owner’s Manual

DIY maintenance carries the risk that you’ll accidentally damage your ATV while trying to fix or maintain it. That’s why it’s so important that you read the owner’s manual. It contains a ton of information about how to best take care of your model, including a list of products that can be used on your ATV without damaging it.

Oil

Engine oil allows your ATV’s internal components to glide against each other instead of grinding or scraping. You’ll need to inspect the oil every once in a while to ensure that it hasn’t become too old and sludgy to do its job. Oil that feels gritty to touch is full of metal shavings, a sign that parts of your engine are rubbing together. Replace the oil as often as your owner’s manual recommends.

Changing the Filters

Filters are what keeps harmful particles from entering your ATV’s engines. These filters will get dirty over time, so swap them out your oil filters whenever you do an oil change. Air filters should be swapped out every three to four oil changes. Fuel filters tend to last a long time, but they still get dirt after extended periods of usage, so be sure to check on them every once in a while.

Spark Plugs

A spark plug is what provides the initial spark that gets your engine going. If your quad isn’t turning over as fast as it used to, check the spark plug. Access the spark plug by disconnecting the battery, removing the engine cover, and taking out the plug using a spark plug wrench. Make sure that the plug casing is clean, dry, and fully intact.
